An account of the resource
The gradual sloping of the tile floor is visible in this view of the empty swimming pool in State Gymnasium.
State Gymnasium was constructed from 1911-1913 and originally included a swimming pool, handball courts, and a running track. During the years 1918 and 1919, the gym became a dining hall for army recruits on campus. The exterior stairs at the center of the north side were added in 1936 and include Christian Petersen sculpture panels. A fire in 1962 caused some damage and loss of equipment. The gymnasium was renovated in 1967, which included a new track and other improvements. From 2009-2012 State Gym underwent a complete renovation project and a large addition was built on the west side including a new pool, basketball courts and running track as well as a skywalk over Union Drive connecting it to Beyer Hall.

An account of the resource
A young man in a suit with drafting equipment. He is posed looking at a gear as if he is about to begin an engineering drawing of the object. Drawing tables fill the room; on the back wall hang a large number of t-squares.
During World War I, Iowa State trained soldiers for the Military. Military draftees were trained as auto mechanics, blacksmiths or machinists. They were housed under the bleachers on State Field. Instruction was mainly in practical assembly, repair, and operation processes, and entirely separate from collegiate work, This detachment of trainees was known as the Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C.). College students between the ages of 18 and 21 years were also able to volunteer for induction into active service. These students combined collegiate campus and army camp, by participating in scholastic study and military drill. A distinct separation of the collegiate and vocational sections was maintained in organization and instruction. The collegiate companies were lodged in fraternity houses and state gym was utilized as a mess hall.

Five pieces of equipment, including a wooden box, are identified with numbers in preparation for soil testing, May 20, 1940.
The Agricultural Experiment Station began at the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (now Iowa State University) as a result of the Hatch Act of 1887 and an act passed by the Iowa General Assembly in 1888. The purpose of the station is to conduct research relating to agriculture and associated disciplines and to disseminate that information. The name of the station was changed in in 1957 to Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station and again in 1966 to Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station.

Everett Kischer carrying the ball. A football game being played before a partially filled stadium of spectators.
Football was played on the Iowa State campus as early as the 1870s, but was only an intramural sport. Soon the different ""teams"" from schools around Iowa began challenging one another to see who was the best in Iowa. The first Iowa State intercollegiate football game was played in 1892 against the State Center team under coach Ira C. Brownlie who was also the captain. College president William Beardshear started an athletic association to officially sanction Iowa State athletic teams in 1894. In1895, Iowa State played Northwestern University and won 36-0. After that game, the headline on the Chicago Tribune read ""Struck by a Cyclone"" in reference to Iowa State's impressive win over Northwestern. Since then, the Iowa State athletic teams have been known as the Cyclones. In 1914, a new field constructed and later named Clyde Williams Field. In 1975, the football games began to be played at the newly constructed Cyclone Stadium, which was later renamed Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State made it to its first bowl game, the Sun Bowl, in 1971.

The Ames & Campus Railway (The Dinkey) is traveling along an area bordered with trees. The front of the photograph indicates that it may have been taken during Excursion Days, October 5-6, 1906.
The Ames & College Railway, better known as the Dinkey, provided transportation between the City of Ames, Iowa and the Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University). As a joint venture of Ames and the College, the Dinkey began operating on July 4, 1891. The Ames & College Railway was sold to the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad in 1907. That year the Dinkey was replaced with an electric streetcar, known as the interurban.
