This is a photograph taken of the school in 1896, at which time the building served as a temporary home for high school students while the new high school facility was constructed. Two primary rooms and a Kindergarten room were located in the building at this time. The North End Grocery store actually joined the location of the Kindergarten room. Instructors for Whittier's primary and Kindergarten classrooms included: Nellie Barr, Kate Whitacre, and Maud White. It replaced Gospel Ridge School after it was torn down. The Skunk River was once known as the Chiquaqua River by Native Americans and pioneers residing in the area in the early 1840's. Because of the Des Moines and Skunk Rivers, Mahaska County's borders were naturally laid out, and the land between the rivers came to be known as "the narrows". Crookham sometime before his death in 1901. Crookham served as the first judge of Mahaska County, between the years 1851 and 1855. Crookham is also credited with organizing the Mahaska County State Bank. Crookham served in the Iowa State House in the sessions of 1864 and 1867. It is also worth noting that Crookham's efforts allowed for such institutions as Oskaloosa College and Penn College to exist. His book entitled, Past and Present of Mahaska County, Iowa includes detailed, biographical accounts of citizens who lived and contributed to Mahaska County between 1844 and 1906, when his book was published. Hedge attended Oskaloosa College and became a teacher at the age of 19. Hedge went on to become Principal at Beacon High School, Mahaska County, in 1878. In 1886, Hedge was elected and served as Superintendent of Mahaska County for four years.
