Mantle, Albion, Iowa Subject The topic of the resource Albion Doctor Description An account of the resource Well respected Dr. W. B. Mantle (Doc Mantle) was born William Brooks Mantle in Polo, Ill.{DOB 1/17/1873, DOD 5/17/1956} and family. Practiced medicine in Albion 1902-1956; wife, Vera born in Bangor, Iowa {DOB 1894, DOD 1985} and daughter Mary born in Albion, Iowa {DOB 11/8/1921 DOD 1995} In 1920, Doc Mantle invited people to his home to listen to the new invention - the radio. His home was where Woody's bar is today. His office practice was on Main Street (S. W. corner of Main St and Brown), with Hunter Drug next door and Keeler Grocery across the street. Dr. Mantle was the last doctor to practice in Albion; "several stories" tell that he only had one foot/leg but was able to make house calls. 3/18/2021 Kathy Hall, her grandfather was Vera's half brother(?), explained that Doc Mantle lost his foot in a log sawing accident. 5/17/2021 Ellis Harmon confirmed that Doc Mantle was missing part of his leg due to kicking a log and missing; buzz saw cut off part of his leg. Local folklore suggests Doc Mantle kept the foot in a jar of preservatives in his office. Dr. Mantle, Vera, and Mary were laid to rest in the Albion Cemetery. The Heritage Center has many possessions of Dr. Mantle.
