Description
An account of the resource
One of 320 portraits, from an unknown photographer circa early to mid-1930’s. Photographs were developed from original glass plate negatives. Names on the envelopes appeared to be the person responsible for paying rather than the sitter. Most plates show retouching in the faces. Often if there are two portraits on one plate, one will show retouching and the other will not. The retouching looks like it was done with a fine pencil on the emulsion side, but some other tool may have been used.

Description
An account of the resource
In August of 1852, surveyed by George W. Voris and Thomas S. Brown, a town called Lafayette emerged. Due to another town named the same, 1858 saw the named changed to Albion.
The first log home was built in 1852. Within 15 years, 500 people had settled in Albion.
By 1858, Albion held the deciding votes in the county seat contest. The county high school was located here. In 1872, the property was sold, with Methodists operating a seminary until about 1891, when competing high schools caused the board to close its doors to the seminary.
In 1870, the Iowa Central Railroad came through.
Seeing many more firsts, Albion's growth was positive.
Folklore has Jesse James and family living in Albion in 1879. Staying in the local hotel on Main Street, many people were said to have seen him.
Seeing many more firsts, Albion's growth was positive.
The Library and Heritage Center has much more information and examples of life in the 1800 and 1900's.
1921 City of Albion letterhead includes this statement: We are all boosters in Albion. With us it's Albion first, last and always. Albion is a good place to live in, and we are trying to make it better. Come and help.
