Radial engine and propeller, close-up

Description

Duplicate of the radial motor and propeller destroyed when Billy Robinson crashed. This motor was built by the Dodge Tool company, a Grinnell enterprise headed by W. S. Dodge, following Robinson's plans and drawings. It is currently on display at the Grinnell Regional Airport and Billy C. Robinson Field.

Grinnell aviator, born September 24, 1884 in Redfield, South Dakota. Died in plane crash March 11, 1916 attempting to break the existing American altitude record of 17,000 feet. Robinson had previously attained an altitude of 14,000 feet.

Billy Robinson in his monoplane with radial engine and parasol-type wings. On October 17, 1914, Robinson set a new American record in his plane for a non-stop flight, flying 370 miles in four hours, 44 minutes, from Des Moines to Kentland, Ind., carrying mail in what may have been the second authorized mail delivery in the United States.
