Benz was a journalism professor, Gallup a university graduate and founder of the Gallup Poll, and Hancher the president of the University of Iowa from 1940 to 1964.
Close Hall, at the northwest corner of Dubuque Street and Iowa Avenue, housed the University of Iowa School of Journalism from its founding in 1924 until much of the building was destroyed by fire on New Year’s Day 1940.
