Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Manoah Hedge Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2008-07-29 Description An account of the resource Wilbur A. McNeill was a successful businessman in the coal mining industry. Born in 1843, McNeill gained his early education at Sandstone Seminary until 1861, when McNeill enlisted in the Fourth Illinois Cavalry to fight the Confederacy. McNeill was severely wounded in a hand to hand pistol duel while forces were skirmishing in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1873, McNeill partnered with his brother, Hobart A. McNeill, to form the Iowa Central Company, a coal mining business that eventually merged to form the Consolidated Coal Company. In 1881, McNeill and his brother sold the stock in the business for half a million dollars cash. Afterwards, McNeill founded the Oskaloosa Livery and Transfer Company, which enjoyed much success. McNeill then went on to become president of the W.A. Company in Seattle, Washington and the H.W. McNeill Company, Limited, in Alberta, Canada. Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Union Historical Company, Librarian of Congress Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2008-07-29 Description An account of the resource Few men have enjoyed more success in both the railroad and coal mining inudstries than H.W. McNeill. Born June 18, 1847, in Peoria, Illinois, Hobart W. McNeill studied at the University of Virginia until the school was closed by the Confederacy. Afterwards, McNeill went to the University of Michigan to study law and was admitted to the bar in Springfield, Illinois in 1868. In 1869, he moved to Eldora, Iowa to form a law office with Enoch W. Eastman, former Governor of Iowa. In 1870, McNeill began his lucrative career in the railroad industry, becoming a special agent for the Iowa Valley Construction Company, which was responsible for building the Iowa Central Railroad. In 1872, McNeill became the secret agent for the St. Louis and St. Paul Railroad and eventually became president of that railroad. Recognizing the amount of money that could potentially be gained in the coal industry in connection with the railroad, McNeill formed a partnership with his brother, W.A. McNeill, to begin the Iowa Central Company, which eventually was merged into the Consolidated Coal Company. After many profitable years, the McNeill's sold their stock in the company to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company for $500,000.00 in cash in 1881. Afterwards, H.W. McNeill continued his expertise in the railroad industry, among others. By the time of his death on January 27, 1900, H.W. McNeill had established himself as one of the brightest businessmen not only in Oskaloosa, but in the state of Iowa, and all of the United States. Kirk Watkins Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 2008-07-29 Description An account of the resource This 1896 image shows the coal mining operation going on at Lost Creek, Iowa, located near Eddyville in Mahaska County. Lost Creek is the site of one of the deadliest coal mining explosions in history. On Friday, January 24, 1902, around noon, 67 men working inside of the coal mine at Lost Creek had gone to one of the rooms underground to eat their lunch. At about the same time, the midday dynamite rig went off as usual, but instead, the flames from this explosion ignited the carbon dust in the air, forcing the explosion into the room where the men were eating lunch. Twenty of the men died outright from the blast. Eighteen were injured, many of whom died later from injuries sustained during the blast. It has gone down in history as the Lost Creek Holocaust. Needless to say, after this accident, the coal mine did not stay in operation much longer, and hence went the coal mining community of Lost Creek.
