Title

Women's March for Better Schools, Oskaloosa, Iowa, circa 1940

Description

The American school system would not be where it is today unless individuals advocated for its improvement over the course of American history. In this photograph, women in downtown Oskaloosa, Iowa are showing their desire for Oskaloosa to improve its current school system. Without the right to demonstrate, which is protected under the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, progress in this country would be slow and could very well be nonexistent.

Title

Women's Rights Movement Parade; Oskaloosa, Iowa, Circa 1910

Description

The Women's Rights Movement was not just a scene in big cities like New York or Chicago in the early 1900's, but rather it was a movement that reached all parts of the country. From big cities to rural America, the voices of women could be heard by all regarding the all important issue of voting. Finally, on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Without parades such as as the one seen here in downtown Oskaloosa, Iowa, it is unclear how long it may have taken for women to obtain the right to vote.

World War I sendoff parade, April 26, 1916, Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mahaska County

Description

This photograph was taken on April 26, 1916, as the men from Company H departed for Europe in World War I. The men paraded down High Avenue East in downtown Oskaloosa to be properly sent off by the community and loved ones. Many of these men went on to serve their country gallantly in France before coming home. Some of the men did not return home, but those who did make it back didn't return until May 14, 1919, more than three years later, at which time they were greeted whole-heartedly by the community.

Title

World War I troops roster, June, 1918; Oskaloosa, Iowa; Mahaska County

Description

This is a list of the men who participated in World War I and was taken in June, 1918. It is not clear if the men pictured here already had served in the war or if they were about to be sent overseas to fight Germany and the Ottoman Empire. The reason why this is not known is because the United States was already involved in the war for over a year at this point and the war did not end until November, 1918.
