From big cities to rural America, the voices of women could be heard by all regarding the all important issue of voting. Finally, on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Without parades such as as the one seen here in downtown Oskaloosa, Iowa, it is unclear how long it may have taken for women to obtain the right to vote. Taken in the late 1800's, the crowd gathering outside the town square could have been doing so for a number of reasons. Perhaps a new medicine was on the market that the local druggist was promoting for his patrons or potential patrons? Maybe the crowd was gathering to welcome home a person that had been out of the community for a considerable amount of time? In late 19th Century American Society, it would have been common to see crowds gathering for these particular reasons, because the citizens in the community had a vested interest in each other and their well-being, which reverts back to why it was very valuable for communities like Oskaloosa to have a town square as a setting for this type of comradery. In this particular photograph, nothing stands out as remarkably significant, other than the fact that it catches a community at the threshold of time in the way in which it allows its citizens to travel through the community. On the right side of the road, the newly established automobile is making its way through the downtown, while on the left side of the newly paved road is the traditional horse and buggy trodding along to its destination.
