Description
An account of the resource
Historian Darlene Clark Hine said: "There is an urgent need to discover and collect more primary source materials pertaining to the lives and experiences of ordinary middle western Black women in both rural and urban communities." Although Hine and her colleagues centered their efforts on African-American women in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan -- states which traditionally have had more sizable black populations than Iowa -- the history of African-American women in this state is no less important. Indeed, Iowa's African women share a collective history that is both precious and powerful but all too seldom explored. --Kathryn M. Dinosaur fossil sculpture constructed from catalog cards.
My first thought when I saw the cards was that they were the color of bones. That, coupled with the thought of how the card catalog has become extinct in most libraries, gave me idea to create a fossil of some sort. Taking off from the definition of dinosaur as a relic, it all fell into place. As we are a medical school library, bones were fitting for our contribution.
We’ve created a display in the lobby of our library spotlighting Dr. Bones, giving some background about your project and offering some information on the history of card catalogs. I’m really pleased with how it all turned out.

Machine-sewn catalog cards containing inkjet prints of images and text.
This artist book, made from 12 cards, is machine stitched and inkjet printed. It’s titled after four words extracted from the book titles on each card: ALL, EXTRAORDINARY, SCENIC, SOCIETY. It includes images from a children’s encyclopedia printed in 1962. When the book is folded, the holes on each card are aligned to fit a string closing the book. I had fun making this book. It was like a puzzle fitting all the pieces together: size, titles, hole, theme, images and stitching.

Mildred Wirt Benson Collection
Description
An account of the resource
Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson was an American journalist and author of children's books, in particular the earliest Nancy Drew mysteries. Writing under Stratemeyer Syndicate pen name Carolyn Keene from 1929 to 1947, she contributed to 23 of the first 30 originally published Nancy Drew mysteries.
Benson was born Mildred Augustine in Ladora, Iowa to Lillian and Dr. J. L. Augustine. She married Asa Wirt, who worked for Associated Press, and, after Wirt's death in 1947, married George A. Benson, editor of the Toledo Blade newspaper of Toledo, Ohio three years later. He died in 1959. She earned her degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1925, returned and earned her master's degree in journalism in 1927, the first student to do so there. She worked for 58 years as a journalist, writing a weekly column for the Toledo Blade and continuing to work full-time (mostly writing obituaries) until a few months before her death, from lung cancer, in 2002 at the age of 96.
Benson also wrote many other series, including the Penny Parker books, which were published under her own name and which she told interviewers were her favorites.
This collection includes the title pages, advertisements, and tables of contents of some of the novels she wrote. There are also pictures, letters and other personal memorabilia.

Iowa City Flood
Description
An account of the resource
In June 2008, the Midwest experienced one of its most severe floods on record, causing the closure of highways and the evacuation of homes and businesses. Compiled in this collection are over 3,400 photographs taken by the University News Services documenting the event on the University of Iowa campus and in the Iowa City/Coralville area. Also included are two dozen oral history interviews, recorded by the UI Anthropology Department and by StoryCorps in collaboration with the UI Libraries, that capture the experiences of eastern Iowans affected by the flood.

Description
An account of the resource
Interview with StoryCorps facilitator Anna Walters (25) of Denver, Colorado and Marta A. Holliday (26) of Manhasset, New York.
Anna talks to University of Iowa graduate student Marta about her experience being evacuated during the Iowa River flood of 2008.
Marta - born and raised in Hemptstead, NY. Uniondale High School, then Marymount in Manhattan. Came to Iowa City to study English. Study abroad in Scotland (00:00:42) -- Things Marta loves about Iowa City. People, hominess (00:03:00) -- Fifth year student - tragic mulatta, representation of biracial women's bodies. Talks about her hopes for a dissertation and a book (00:04:20) -- Hard winter in 2007/2008. University shut down twice. Riverfest in April had to be moved because of water (00:06:30) -- Went home for three weeks in May. Flew back on June 6 - flying over the corn fields, it looked flooded. Didn't think much about it (00:08:46) -- Went to lunch at IMU, but the Amphitheater was underground - river looked rapid. Had to climb over sandbags to go on her usual walks (00:11:45) -- June 12 - evacuated. Her dorm - Hawkeye Court - hadn't been affected in 1993 (00:13:20) -- Wrote about the things she chose for her containers - allowed three containers if you didn't have a car (00:15:25) -- Had very little time to pack. Tried to print her articles, pack schoolwork. Important things: teddy bears, notebooks, family bible (00:16:54) -- Used the hospital for toiletries, socks, food. Lived at Hillcrest (00:18:47) -- June 13 - Curfews in effect, had to run to CVS to get socks over the bridge. Power was cut off, out for six days (00:19:36) -- New friends in that situation, other evacuees. Saw images of town underwater, other-worldly feel (00:21:20) -- Calling her best friend, praying. Contacting professors, told her not to worry about exams (00:23:45) -- Writing poems for comfort (00:25:10) -- June 23 - returned to her old housing. Apartment wasn't damaged. Smell, debris on the ground. University had emptied the refrigerators (00:27:36) -- Walking around, taking pictures of damage. Celebrating a shared birthday with her mother in July. Trying to return to normalcy (00:31:33) -- Lessons: not taking things for granted, paying attention to where you live (00:35:00) -- Famous photo from 1993 flood: "HELP" written in sandbags (00:36:50)
