Title A name given to the resource Albion Municipal Library, Albion, Iowa Subject The topic of the resource Albion Municipal Library, Albion, Iowa Description An account of the resource Albion Municipal Library, Albion, Iowa. Original library was located in the old fire station (currently city hall - 2023) It was opened in April 12, 1982. The Library came about due to the closing of Albion Elementary school in 1981. Various clubs, organizations and volunteers were responsible for the success of the library building. It was expanded in May 1983 as more space was needed. JoAnne Mittelstadt was the original librarian. In 1993, Jan Borton started as librarian. The library is used by Albion residents, local rural borrowers and others from other locations such as Liscomb and Green Mountain. Several fund raisers were held to help with the operating expenses. The first computer was available in 1994, and internet in 1996. By 2003, seven computers were available for public use. The library was open 22 hours a week. Folding banquet tables were used to hold the computers. There was limited parking and lack of workspace and storage. Shortages of electrical outlets were a problem too. September 2002 began the capital campaign kick off for the new library building. In 2007, the new library building was opened, again with the help of organizations, clubs and many volunteers. The statement of purpose prior to 2007 was "The Albion Municipal Library will support life-long learning by providing patrons with materials and activities that inform, educate, and enrich their lives." The current mission statement states "We bring People, Information & entertainment together to enrich lives & build community." A high school building was started in 1859, completed in 1860. After the building was finished, the state failed to pass the enactment for the funds. The building was then transferred to the Lutheran Synod of Iowa which agreed to conduct a college. First term began December 1860. Again, financial difficulties occurred and the college surrendered the property. The building was then leased to the private school under the name Albion College. In 1872, property was sold to Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church. 1876 saw the first graduating class from the Seminary. The seminary continued until 1892 when it closed. In 1898, the building was reopened as a township public school and continued until 1915 when the building was razed to make room for a new and modern building. The school continued and the last high school graduating class was in 1962. Mrs. Cripps was mistress of rooming boarding house for out of town students. Albion was the first consolidated High School in Iowa. The building continued to house the elementary school until 1981. In 1980, Albion residents were told the elementary school would close and children would be bussed to various Marshalltown schools. In 1981, the town attempted to change the minds of the school board to keep the school open. The appeal ended up in the Iowa Supreme Court in June 1982 with the result of the school closing. 5/5/2018 there was a Albion School Memorial photo with classes from 1915-1981.
