Description

Children's Hospital was later renamed the Steindler Building. The University Hospital operated the Perkins School for children who were long-term patients, beginning in fall 1916. It was named for the 1915 Perkins Act, which allowed for treatment of poor children at state expense, and brought in much needed numbers of patients for the teaching hospital.

Oliver Perry Myers diary, 1872-1873

Description

Diary kept by Oliver Perry Myers (1856-1933), of West Chester, Iowa. Though Oliver worked many hours a week on the family farm, he also received a strong education. After completing high school, he attended the University of Iowa and graduated as the class valedictorian in 1880.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Oliver studied law with two different law firms in Iowa City and in Newton. He completed his studies and practiced law in Newton. He also became involved in politics, and served as a State Senator for the 29th District beginning in 1930. He died on March 6, 1933.

Diary kept by Louis Parsons of Burlington, Iowa. Parsons grew up in Burlington during the 1870s and 1880s. His father, Albion, owned a general store. while his mother, Mary, raised Louis and older sister Ella. When Louis was 13, his father died.

&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

As a boy, Louis enjoyed drawing and playing with his cousins. His interests also included technical hobbies such as photography and making electric batteries. He attended West Hill, a private school in Burlington, but a number of health problems caused him to miss one year of school. One of Louis' favorite childhood memories was a visit to California in 1889.
