An account of the resource
Pictured here are a couple of strollers making their way through the Oskaloosa town square, also known as the city park. For many, the sidewalks cut through the city park served as a shortcut to get home or to another business located diagonally across the park. Not pictured here, but to the left of the individuals walking in the photograph is the famous Oskaloosa Bandstand, which was built in 1882.

Pictured here is the Westside of the Oskaloosa town square as it appeared in the late 1800's. The Westside of the square was located on South Market Street. The city park was located just across the street, which is where many of the town's festivities were held. Note the bicycle on the left hand side of the picture and the old wagon on the right side of the image.

An account of the resource
The primary means of transportation for police officers in Oskaloosa in the early 1900's was by foot or horseback. Pictured here are three Oskaloosa police officers on patrol via horseback around 1910. Note the building construction taking place in the background. South Market Street is the setting of the background in the picture and would have been a commonly patrolled street, as most businesses were situated on this road. The mere image of the police officers would have served as a deterrent to potential robbers and thieves. Not until around 1920 did Oskaloosa get its first squad car, allowing officers to ride in more comfort and at a quicker pace.

An account of the resource
This was a photograph taken after the Bennett-Loughridge house fire on May 23, 1909, of fire horses Doris and Coly with driver Elmert Patterson, captain of the Oskaloosa Fire Department. Also riding in the picture is John Starlin, one of the town's firemen. The horse and wagon with large buckets of water was the way that fires were fought by community firemen until the end of the 1910's, when the first conception of an automobile equipped with a water hose came about.

An account of the resource
Dating from around 1900, this is a shot of a general store with its staff taking a moment to pose for the camera. General stores were very common in the early 1900's in rural communities like Oskaloosa, Iowa. In the center of the photograph is a small sign advertising the selling of biscuits and other breads from the National Biscuit Company, formerly known as the American Biscuit Company. In 1898, the company changed its name and operated out of 114 different cracker bakeries around the country. Today, the National Biscuit Company (also known as Nabisco) operates under Kraft Foods.

This was a picture taken from the 2000 block of High Avenue East in downtown Oskaloosa, Iowa, circa 1900. The store in the right corner of the photograph is Huber and Sons. All other stores/buildings in the photograph are actually on South Market Street. Across the street from these establishments is the famous town square of Oskaloosa, which is still popularly in use today.

An account of the resource
This was the how the downtown of Oskaloosa, Iowa appeared in the early 1900's. Brutal winters in Iowa made travel very difficult and almost remote at times, even if it was just to travel to the downtown area to pick up something from a store. Note the horse and buggy pictured at the right hand side of the image and the street lamp posts from the period.

An account of the resource
Pictured here is the 1907 Oskaloosa baseball team from Oskaloosa, Iowa. Based on the excerpt under the photograph of the players, the team was facing a serious financial crisis in 1907, looking at a team debt of $2,800.00. In order to raise funds so that the team could continue playing in the league, a ten day carnival was held to raise money for the team, which turned out to be a great success and allowed the team to participate in the 1907 season. On a separate note, Mattick (middle row, second from right) had a son named Bobby that ended up playing shortstop for the Chicago Cubs in 1938. The other players in the photograph are identified in the excerpt below the picture of the players.
