C.L. Barnhouse in Iowa Brigade Band Uniform, Circa 1895; Oskaloosa, Iowa

Description

When citizens of Oskaloosa think of music, the name C.L. Barnhouse comes to mind often. Barnhouse came to Iowa from West Virginia as a young adult in search of a successful music career. In 1890, he made Oskaloosa, Iowa his residence and formed the Knights of Pythias Brigade Band. A self-taught cornet player, Barnhouse and his band practiced their music and routines constantly, establishing themselves among the people of Oskaloosa and that of Iowa as an entertaining and serious band. When Barnhouse came to Iowa, he also created the Barnhouse Music Publishing Company, which emphasized printing and publicizing music created during the late 19th Century. This business was very successful and is still running today in Oskaloosa. Barnhouse died in 1929, leaving a musical legacy to the town of Oskaloosa

Title

Street Scene in Beacon, Iowa, Circa 1910

Description

Beacon, once known as the town of Enterprise, did not fully switch its name over until 1874. Beacon's success revolved around its coal mining connection and proximity to the railroad lines. Before Oskaloosa established a railroad line through its community, many goods came via railway to Beacon, allowing it to grow and become a thriving community. At one time, Beacon had its own town square. This picture depicts some homes along one of Beacon's main roads, that being Kilbourne Street.

Title

South Market Street in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Circa 1905

Description

Pictured here is a scene from downtown Oskaloosa, Iowa on South Market Street looking north around the year 1905. At the time of this picture, most of the road had been paved and had brick laid to serve as the road, but the horse and buggy are still the primary means of transportation in Oskaloosa at this point. The automobile would eventually make its way into the daily scene, but it would take approximately another decade for this to be present.

Oskaloosa Town Square Looking South, Late 1800's; Iowa

Description

Pictured here is the Westside of the Oskaloosa town square as it appeared in the late 1800's. The Westside of the square was located on South Market Street. The city park was located just across the street, which is where many of the town's festivities were held. This particular image homes in on a few of the many business establishments on this block. In particular were the Frankel Dry Goods store and Baldauf and Rosenblatt's dry goods company, both of which competed against one another over the years. This image is a shot of the block looking south.

Oskaloosa Town Square Gathering, 1920's; Iowa

Description

This is a picture of the Oskaloosa town square/city park during the 1920's. The gathering of so many at the city park could have been for a number of reasons, but the clues in this image indicate that it was a gathering for political purposes or to celebrate the 4th of July. With stars and stripes on the float people are standing on, it is obvious that it was an occasion to celebrate.
