Title

Botany faculty, 1976

Description

Botany faculty in the fall of 1976. Twelve men are standing on the steps of Bessey Hall.
The Department of Botany was established at Iowa State in 1870 with Charles E. Bessey serving as Dept. Head. Professor Bessey guided the Botany Department during its formative years and he created the first undergraduate botanical laboratory in the United States as well as the university's herbarium. Graduate work for the M.S. degree was offered in 1871, and in 1914 major work leading to the Ph.D. degree was added. In 2003, the Botany Department was combined with Microbiology and Zoology/Genetics to form the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology.

<![CDATA[Plaiting a horse's mane]]> https://www.iowaheritage.org/items/show/66659

Title

Plaiting a horse's mane

Description

This photograph illustrates the technique of mane braiding, also called plaiting. Shown is the head and neck of a white Percheron draft horse with ribbon and five alternating dark and light colored flowers braided into the mane along the horse's crest, beginning at the poll (ears) and ending in a switch of ribbon at the withers (shoulder). Part of the mane has been left hanging down along the side of the neck, resulting in a ""half-plait"" since only half of the hair is braided or plaited. Braiding manes for show is still a popular technique used today for enhancing the appearance of a horse.
The Department of Animal Husbandry was established in 1898. At that time, the department had five breeds of horses, six breeds of cattle, seven breeds of sheep, and breeds of swine used for classes and research in breeding and feeding. Also in 1898, students in the Animal Husbandry participated in the first intercollegiate livestock judging contest at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska. Throughout the 20th century, the curriculum has focused on animal breeding and nutrition, meat and milk production, and pork, poultry, beef, dairy, sheep and equine systems management. The name of the Department was changed of the Department of Animal Science in 1962. The Department of Poultry Science merged with the Department in 1971.

Title

Water tower construction, 1897

Description

The Water Tower construction site on March 22, 1897, about 5:00 PM. Old Main and the Chemical and Physical Laboratory are visible in the distance.
Erected in 1897, the Water Tower was built to alleviate the water shortage on the Iowa State campus, which in 1895 had forced the cancellation of classes for two weeks. Designed by Anson Marston (Dean of Engineering, 1914-1932), the Water Tower was the first elevated steel water tower west of the Mississippi. Standing 168 feet above campus, the tank itself was 40 feet tall and 24 feet in diameter and held 162,000 gallons. The use of the Water Tower was discontinued in 1978 when the university switched to a city water system. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and in 1997, it was restored.

Morrill Hall

Description

View of the front (east) side of Morrill Hall. Many bushes and trees are in the forefront of the photo.
Morrill Hall was constructed to fill the need for a library and museum, as well as a chapel. The building was named to honor Senator Justin Morrill who had sponsored the Morrill Act, which established the land-grant college system. Morrill Hall was designed by Josselyn and Taylor, architects from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and built at a cost of less than $30,000, in 1890-1891. It has been the home to zoology, entomology, and geology classes and labs; Agricultural Extension offices; Printing Office; Photo Service; and even a barber shop from 1905-1908. Morrill Hall was vacant between 1996 and its renovation, which began in 2005. Morrill Hall was re-dedicated in 2007 and currently houses the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, the Textiles and Clothing Museum, and the Christian Petersen Art Museum.

Title

Woman on horse at the Knoll

Description

An unidentified woman wearing a white dress and holding a cat, sits sidesaddle on a saddle horse near one of the entrances to the Knoll. A good view of the building's brick foundation appears.
The Knoll, a large brick house situated in a park like setting, is home to the president of Iowa State University. It was designed by Liebbe, Nourse, and Rasmussen and built by C.R. Cushman in 1900-1901. President William Beardshear (1891-1902) and his family were the first to live in the Knoll. In 1912, before the arrival of President Raymond Pearson (1912-1926), the Knoll temporarily housed the Department of Music after a fire had destroyed South Hall. Over the years, the Knoll has been renovated numerous times. The last renovation took place in 2001 and included the addition of a commercial grade kitchen, family room and kitchen for the president's family, and updated electrical and heating and cooling systems.
