Description
An account of the resource
The primary means of transportation for police officers in Oskaloosa in the early 1900's was by foot or horseback. Pictured here are three Oskaloosa police officers on patrol via horseback around 1910. Note the building construction taking place in the background. South Market Street is the setting of the background in the picture and would have been a commonly patrolled street, as most businesses were situated on this road. The mere image of the police officers would have served as a deterrent to potential robbers and thieves. Not until around 1920 did Oskaloosa get its first squad car, allowing officers to ride in more comfort and at a quicker pace.

An account of the resource
Pictured here is a meat packing plant on the southwest side of Oskaloosa, Iowa, as it appeared in 1884. At this time, the plant would process over one thousand hogs per day, making it a thriving operation at the time. The processed meat would then be loaded onto rail cars and shipped via railroad across the country to markets willing to sell pork products.

Completed in 1897, the second Oskaloosa High School was located at the corner of B Avenue and North First Street, which was only two blocks from the town square. The new high school was built on a bond valued at $30, 000. Later, the high school was used to house junior high students until a new junior high was constructed in 1984.

An account of the resource
Pictured in this photograph are seventy-five students from Oskaloosa High School in 1916. Of the thirty-two students pictured, twenty-three are boys and the other nine are girls. Based on historical patterns, these numbers are surprising, as in the early 20th century, it was not uncommon for boys to quit attending school after grammar school so they could work full-time at a farm or factory, leaving girls to go on with their studies in high school and college as well.

This is an image taken of students in the Oskaloosa High School library around 1940. By the traditional standards of the early 21st Century, libraries in the early 20th Century were very small and had little room, giving reason to the notion of absolute silence in the library.
