The teaching of agricultural engineering at Iowa State University began in 1903 and was overseen by the Department of Agronomy from 1905 to 1907. The Department of Agricultural Engineering was formally established in 1907. It was renamed the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering in 1990. In 2004, the Department merged with the Department of Industrial Education and Technology. It is jointly administered by the College of Engineering and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Description
An account of the resource
This photograph illustrates the technique of mane braiding, also called plaiting. Shown is the head and neck of a white Percheron draft horse with ribbon and five alternating dark and light colored flowers braided into the mane along the horse's crest, beginning at the poll (ears) and ending in a switch of ribbon at the withers (shoulder). Part of the mane has been left hanging down along the side of the neck, resulting in a ""half-plait"" since only half of the hair is braided or plaited. Braiding manes for show is still a popular technique used today for enhancing the appearance of a horse.
The Department of Animal Husbandry was established in 1898. At that time, the department had five breeds of horses, six breeds of cattle, seven breeds of sheep, and breeds of swine used for classes and research in breeding and feeding. Also in 1898, students in the Animal Husbandry participated in the first intercollegiate livestock judging contest at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska. Throughout the 20th century, the curriculum has focused on animal breeding and nutrition, meat and milk production, and pork, poultry, beef, dairy, sheep and equine systems management. The name of the Department was changed of the Department of Animal Science in 1962. The Department of Poultry Science merged with the Department in 1971.

The Agricultural Experiment Station began at the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (now Iowa State University) as a result of the Hatch Act of 1887 and an act passed by the Iowa General Assembly in 1888. The purpose of the station is to conduct research relating to agriculture and associated disciplines and to disseminate that information. The name of the station was changed in in 1957 to Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station and again in 1966 to Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station.

Description
An account of the resource
Snow is deep next to fences along a plowed road near a farm with a two-story white farmhouse, swine, and sheds for the swine.
