Title

Two drums used in processing agricultural by- products, 1931

Description

These two rotating cylinder drums are operated by pulleys. On each drum is a spigot and each has a rectangular pan underneath. The drum on the left is smaller than the one on the right.
Iowa State University first offered chemical engineering courses in 1909. The Department of Mining Engineering, Ceramics, and Chemical Engineering was established in 1913. The Department of Chemical Engineering became a separate department in 1920 and under went numerous name changes over the years, which include the Department of Chemical Engineering (1920-1928, 1956-1973, 1978-2005), Department of Chemical and Mining Engineering (1928-1956), Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering (1973-1978), and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (2005-present).

Title

Two cadettes welding parts of the tail of a wrecked plane, 1943

Description

These cadettes with their hair wrapped in a turban and wearing eye protection, are working on the tail of a wrecked plane in the Welding Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Building. One of the projects for the five-week laboratory course was making a rudder pedal by welding the necessary parts.
During World War II, the Curtiss-Wright Corporation sponsored an engineering program for women students at several American universities, including Iowa State University. The Curtiss-Wright Engineering Cadettes were trained in drafting, stress analysis, materials lab, aerodynamics, and production liaison. Once the program was completed, the cadettes received an engineering certificate. The cadettes were not fully trained engineers, but were given adequate training so that they could assist engineers with their jobs. The company hoped their engineers would be able to accomplish more in less time with the aid of trained assistants. The courses began on February 15, 1943 with 100 cadets enrolled. When the course was completed 90 women out of the original 100 graduated, with 84 of the graduates being employed at the Curtiss-Wright Corporation plant in St. Louis.

Twenty-five year lettermen, Homecoming ,1951

Description

Seven 25-year lettermen are posing at the 1951 Homecoming
Alumni first began returning to Iowa State for an official Homecoming in 1912. Since then, the celebration continues to entertain both young and old Iowa Staters, with traditional events, including tailgate parties, fireworks, lawn displays, ""Yell Like Hell"" cheering competition, and mass campaniling. Currently, the Student Alumni Association Leadership Council coordinates the efforts of hundreds of students, who volunteer their time to help Story County Habitat for Humanity build a house.

Trainging camp, 1917

Description

Activities at training camp. In the foreground in front of a tent encampment a squad of eight men are engaged in making maps. On the image left a group of men are in line to move out of the group of tents.
During World War I, Iowa State trained soldiers for the Military. Military draftees were trained as auto mechanics, blacksmiths or machinists. They were housed under the bleachers on State Field. Instruction was mainly in practical assembly, repair, and operation processes, and entirely separate from collegiate work, This detachment of trainees was known as the Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C.). College students between the ages of 18 and 21 years were also able to volunteer for induction into active service. These students combined collegiate campus and army camp, by participating in scholastic study and military drill. A distinct separation of the collegiate and vocational sections was maintained in organization and instruction. The collegiate companies were lodged in fraternity houses and state gym was utilized as a mess hall.
