Rodney Milburn won a Gold Medal in 1972 at the Munich Olympics (13:24) and set a world record in the 120 yard hurdles (13.00) (June 25, 1971 - ). He also set a world record in the 110 meter hurdles(13.10) (July 22, 1973 - ). Milburn was also undefeated in 27 straight races from 1971-72.

Jim Ryun runs unattached in the Invitational One-Mile Run. Ryun finished a disappointing 7th place. Apparently he had been suffering from dysentery, and didn’t want to disappoint the crowd by dropping out. The race was won by Robert Maplestone of Eastern Washington, with a Drake Relays record setting time of 4:00.4
