Jack Trice

In 1922, Jack Trice became the first African-American student athlete at Iowa State, participating in track and football. On October 6, 1923, he played in his first college football game against the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. On October 8, he died from internal bleeding due to injuries received during the game. This collection contains photographs and memorials to Jack whose legacy was honored in 1997 with the naming of the Iowa State University football stadium the Jack Trice Stadium in 1997.
John Vincent Atanasoff

John Vincent Atanasoff is known as the father of the computer. With the help of one of his students Clifford E. Berry, in Iowa State College, during the 1940s, he created the ABC (Atanasoff-Berry Computer) that was the first electronic digital computer. The collection includes some of his papers and drawings and some videos pertaining to his work.

Looking for Ernest Tomlin Collection, Drake University

The sinking of the Titanic brought a personal loss to the students and staff at Drake University. An "A" student, Tomlin learned in 1910 that his father was ill and traveled to London to care for him. In the spring of 1912, Tomlin booked passage on the "RMS Titanic" in order to return to his studies at Drake.

This collection documents the activities of Mary B. Welch as head of the Domestic Science Department (College of Family and Consumer Science) at Iowa State University from 1875-1883. The collection contains copies of her lectures, correspondence, and news clippings. . To Mrs. Welch belongs the distinction of having established the first classes in "domestic science" ever taught in an established college, which were started in 1872.
