Despite the Hinton family's hardships, Clara received a good education, completing high school, then attending Central College in Pella, Iowa. She went on to receive an advanced degree in library science at the University of Wisconsin, and worked as a librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries. When she neared her death, she donated her papers, including her diary, to the State Historical Society of Iowa.
