Edward F. Winslow papers, July 1864-December 1865

Description

Papers of Edward Winslow, who mustered into Co. F, 4th Iowa Cavalry in November 1861, as a captain. The 4th Iowa later saw action at the siege of Vicksburg, the taking of Jackson, Mississippi, and the battle of Brice's Cross Roads. Winslow was promoted to the rank of colonel on July 4, 1863, and given command of the cavalry forces of the XV Corps. In December of 1964, he was brevetted brigadier-general for gallantry in action. After the hostilities ceased, Winslow was put in command of the Atlanta military district. He was discharged from the Army on August 10, 1865.

John Paisley was born in Ohio in 1831 In the Civil War, he served in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, and he was with General Sherman on his march to the sea. In later life he lived in Iowa, Washington, D.C., and Kansas. He died in 1909.

Marcellus W. Darling papers, 1864

Description

Marcellus Warner Darling was a native of New York. He enlisted in Company K, 154th New York Volunteers on September 6, 1862. The 154th saw a great deal of action during the Civil War. Darling was wounded in the battle of Chancellorsville, was subsequently captured and later escaped. While his regiment was fighting at Gettysburg, Darling was hospitalized with typhoid fever. He fought in the battles at Lookout Mountain and Chickamauga, and participated in the taking of Atlanta, Savannah, and Charleston, during General Sherman's march to the sea. After the war, he was a college professor and later a minister in Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Among his children was cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling.
