What is noteworthy about this picture are the different style of clothing, especially hats, that the men are wearing which were common during the period. The man in the middle of the photograph is wearing a famous derby hat, while the majority of the other men in the photograph are wearing the fashionable flat straw hat known as a straw boater hat. These hats were worn especially in the summer months to keep the head relatively cool still. However, by 1950, the boater hat had lost its touch and its fashion became something of the past.","Chuck Russell","Chuck Russell","Chuck Russell","""2009-06-09""",,www.wmpenn.edu/library/about.html,,"still image/jpeg 2000",,image,"www.wmpenn.edu/library/about.html|http://cdm16125.contentdm.oclc.org/u?/p270701coll6,278",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"View this item in its source respository",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.iowaheritage.org/files/original/b8c371fff417474c856f5fa05516c531.jpg,"Remote Item","Mahaska History",1,0 78915,http://www.iowaheritage.org/items/show/78915,"The Hub Clothing Store in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Circa 1900","Store|Clothing|Apparel|Togs|Men|Oskaloosa|Iowa|Mahaska County|Small Business","Historically, The Hub serves as a wonderful example of American small business at the turn of the 20th Century. Location was the key to American small business success and The Hub definitely had this quality, as it was situated in downtown Oskaloosa on Market Street, the center of activity for Oskaloosa and Mahaska County as well. An interesting note from this photograph is the sign beneath the store label that states ""Mens Togs"". Togs is an old term that refers to clothes, but more specifically to coats. The word togs comes from the Latin term toga, referring to the ancient Roman loose garment worn by public officials to make them look stately.","Chuck Russell","Chuck Russell","Chuck Russell","""2009-06-05""",,www.wmpenn.edu/library/about.html,,"still image/jpeg 2000",,image,"www.wmpenn.edu/library/about.html|http://cdm16125.contentdm.oclc.org/u?/p270701coll6,203",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"View this item in its source respository",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.iowaheritage.org/files/original/3bb4dbab8d2527ceabe48b7edbd8670c.jpg,"Remote Item","Mahaska History",1,0 78009,http://www.iowaheritage.org/items/show/78009,"Old Main; Physical and Chemical Laboratories; Penn College","College Buildings|Men|Women|Students|Laboratories","Old Main, interior image, Physical and Chemical Laboratories, it was the policy ""of the department to add each year some first class pieces of apparatus, believing that by this means an excellent working laboratory can be built up.",,"Penn College Bulletin, New Series IV, April 1913, No. 11 Catalog of 1912-1913","William Penn University.
