In 1903 Mr. Cowles purchased the Register and Leader Company, starting his family's publishing and media empire. Drake University conferred upon Mr. Cowles the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1937 the Gardner Cowles Foundation donated funds for Cowles Library, Drake's main library. Mr. Cowles passed away in 1946.
