Description
An account of the resource
This house on 37th Street was built in 1909 and is still standing. It was the home of Gardner Cowles and his wife Florence. Mr. Cowles was a banker, publisher and politician. He served two terms as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. In 1903 Mr. Cowles purchased the Register and Leader Company, starting his family's publishing and media empire. Drake University conferred upon Mr. Cowles the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1937 the Gardner Cowles Foundation donated funds for Cowles Library, Drake's main library. Mr. Cowles passed away in 1946.

In 1910 Mr. Herring and his wife Emma moved to this home in Des Moines. He was the president of Herring Motor Company. He became governor of Iowa in 1935 and served until 1943. He later served in the U.S. Senate from 1937 - 1943.

Built in 1912 for Henry and Carrie Wallace, this house still stands on 37th street. Mr. Wallace was General Manager of the Wallace Publishing Co., and President of the North Western Live Stock Insurance Company. Mr. Wallace went on to serve as Secretary of Agriculture for both President Harding and President Coolidge.

This house on 42nd Street was the home of E. T. Meredith and his wife Edna. Mr. Meredith was the president and manager of the Successful Farming Publishing Company. Unsuccessful in his 1914 bid for U.S. Senate and his 1916 bid for Governor of Iowa, Mr. Meredith was appointed Secretary of Agriculture by President Wilson. Current site of an apartment building.

This house was built in 1900 and is still standing. It was the home of Frank C. Waterbury and his wife Coral. Mr. Waterbury was the president of the Waterbury Chemical Co. and was involved in many investment companies. He also served as Vice President of the Des Moines College of Pharmacy, which later merged with Drake University to become the Drake College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Description

The Des Moines Club opened in 1912 as a social organization of leading businessmen. The club sat on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building, while the first two floors were leased out to various businesses. Notable members with ties to Drake University have included Benjamin F. Kaufmann, Arthur S. Kirk, Howard V. Gregory, David Kruidenier and many more. The Des Moines Club moved to the 34th floor of the Ruan Center in the 1970's and their original building is now used as a hotel.
