Description
An account of the resource
Historian Darlene Clark Hine said: "There is an urgent need to discover and collect more primary source materials pertaining to the lives and experiences of ordinary middle western Black women in both rural and urban communities." Although Hine and her colleagues centered their efforts on African-American women in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan -- states which traditionally have had more sizable black populations than Iowa -- the history of African-American women in this state is no less important. Indeed, Iowa's African women share a collective history that is both precious and powerful but all too seldom explored. --Kathryn M. Description
An account of the resource
A 1988 graduate of Drake University with a BFA and majors in graphic design and printmaking, Bill showed his work in exhibitions consistently beginning as early as 1978 and has been with Olson-Larsen Galleries since 1994. His work attracts a diverse range of admirers; from veteran art patrons to young first-time collectors.
Within the last several years, Bill Innes has moved into a subtle and progressive series of images while exploring variations in technique, usually in his favorite medium of oil pastels. From simple, densely layered mound like forms almost childlike in simplicity but not in execution he moved to images of fish, palm trees, and increasingly abstract landscapes that contain simple land forms, bulbous clouds, and aspen trees with white trunks. In addition, Bill has created still lifes depicting elaborate flower bouquets using his characteristic palette of rich blues, yellows, greens, and reds.

Description
An account of the resource
A longtime Iowa City resident, Nobles has recently moved to Texas. She has exhibited nationally and internationally for many years, most recently at Hibberd McGrath Gallery (Breckenridge, CO); Mobilia (Cambridge, MA); Thirteen Moons (Santa Fe, NM) and the SOFA in Chicago. She has been awarded artist residencies at Ragdale Foundation and the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.
I see the work approaching the question from many angles - serious and funny, searching and observing, cutting and reassuring, from memory and conjecture. The lessons are coming from women - elders, family, and friends, real role models and fictional ones - and sometimes from a melding of several sources. Needlework seems to tell the story well, as it is the expression handed down through our family, from great-grandmother to grandmother, to mother to me. I have difficulty writing and I sure can't tell a joke, but through these pieces, I become an author and storyteller. I create characters and a setting, and devise a narrative, which may or may not be discernable in the final piece. Lately, I've been thinking more deeply about narrative structure. This has lead to greater attention paid to the development of characters in my pieces. With my three-dimensional pieces, I'm trying to make the actual structure of the piece further the story.

African American Women in Iowa Collection
Neal, from Giving Our History a Home: The African-American Women in Iowa Project.
